A little backstory, calzones originated in Italy, specifically in Naples – the pizza capital of the world. “Calzoni” actually means “trousers” in Italian. This name was assigned to the dish after the men at the time who wore baggy trousers and walked around eating these folded, half-moon shaped variations of pizza. The calzoni were actually meant to be eaten without the use of utensils, so that they can be enjoyed on-the-go.
